9.16.13BillPlymptonByLuigiNovi1.jpgBill Plympton was born in 1946 in the USA. He is referred to as the 'King of indie animation'. Plympton grew up in Portland, Oregon, where it was often too rainy to play outside and due to not being able to go outside as much, for fun he would draw; this is where he says his drawing skills and wild imagination come from. Since he began animating in 1987, Plympton has animated over 40 short films and 6 full-length feature films and published a comic book! He spent 15 years working as an illustrator and cartoonist before turning to animation as his profession, his work even made it into The New York Times, Vanity Fair and Vogue. Plympton worked on political cartoon strips for The Soho Local News, and by the end of 1981, these comics were in over 20 different Newspapers. It's safe to say that Bill Plympton has worked his way up the ladder to make his way into the top tiers of becoming an amazing animator! At 14 years old Plympton sent off his comic drawings to Disney asking for a job, he got refused as he was far too young- but Disney said his artwork showed promise. This would be a massive boost for any aspiring animator! So Plympton continued to focus on his artwork through school and attended Port State University to study graphics, and the School of Visual Arts in New York City to continue to major his work of cartooning. His style is very unique and has even been featured in the opening credits for The Simpsons! It's very cartoony, old looking and over the top. This really helps to distinguish Plympton's work from other pieces of animation, there is something very original and unusual about the artwork he produces. A lot of his work is even based on himself, as a self portrait.

In his time as an animator, Plympton has been nominated for two Oscars, for Guard Dog (2004) and Your Face (1987) nominated for 46 other awards and won 37 various awards for his work as an animator, illustrator and director in film.
