So I spent a lot of my day today downloading pre-rigged canines and playing around with them. These have been my results so far. I'm going to come back and do the walk cycle again, and a run cycle soon, this gives me a better idea of what it is I'm getting myself into- it's not been a bad process. I think building the physical armatures helped me with this, it's nice to have something physical to mess around with before doing it in Maya- and of course I was using reference sheets to help me animate this short walk cycle.
I also had a little go with posing (this rig doesn't have a lot of points in the leg to move around, so it looks more teddy-esc, and quite floppy as a result) which I had fun with- bouncing between a few different rigs has been interesting and insightful, I'm able to get an understanding of what kind of things I should be aiming for, what works better and what doesn't. I've honestly enjoyed the process of figuring things out, there's not a whole lot out there for specifically animating a quadruped. So I've been having fun and pushing myself out of my comfort zone, jumping straight in to give it all a go.
